Meerschaum pipes are made of a white mineral: magnesium silicate (sometimes called magnesite or sepiolite), extracted from the ground in the region of Eskisehir in Turkey. This material was used from the 18th century by Austrians carvers, who have made real works of art. The English and French artisans have also worked on it. Today, Turkish pipe makers are -in principle- the only ones to be allowed to use this material for making pipes. Meerschaum is light, porous and pleasant to smoke. It takes a pretty yellow-brown color after many uses. It should be noted that spermaceti (a wax found in the head of sperm whales), formerly used to treat the meerschaums, favored staining. Today, meerschaums are polished with beeswax and take a little more time to change color. Meerschaums allow abstract sculpture works as well as works representing human or animal heads.
